💨 What Is Compressor Surge?
Compressor surge happens when the turbo is making more boost than the engine can take in — usually at low RPM or during throttle lift.
When that happens, the airflow through the compressor wheel stalls or reverses, creating:
A fluttering or chuffing sound
Stress on the turbo bearings and shaft
Slower spool-up and possible long-term damage
⚙️ What the Anti-Surge Cover Does
The anti-surge cover has extra air ports or slots around the compressor inlet. These allow a small amount of air to recirculate from the high-pressure area near the wheel back to the inlet when the turbo starts to surge.
This controlled bleed of air:
Prevents the airflow from stalling
Widen the compressor map, meaning the turbo can operate efficiently over a broader range of boost and airflow
Improves low-speed drivability (especially on larger turbos)
Helps the turbo spool more smoothly when coming on boost
